Some beach days are about schedules and checklists. Others are about tradition, familiarity, and slowing down enough to actually enjoy being together. For me, growing up in Bermuda means the beach has always been part of everyday life. Now, as a parent, those same beaches have taken on new meaning as places where my family makes memories in a quieter, more intentional way.
Bermuda’s beaches aren’t just beautiful. They’re diverse. Each one offers a different experience, which is why a single beach day can easily include more than one stop. That variety is what makes family beach days here feel effortless instead of overwhelming.
John Smith’s Bay: A Girls’ Day Tradition

One of the most meaningful beaches for me is John Smith’s Bay. This beach has become a girls’ day tradition for me, my mom, and my daughter. It’s calm, scenic, and grounding in a way that invites you to slow down without trying.
We usually make a full day of it. We bring lunch, sit together, talk, and take photos with the ocean behind us. Not posed photos, but real ones. Laughing mid-sentence. Wind in our hair. Moments you don’t plan but always remember.
John Smith’s Bay feels tucked away, even though it’s easy to reach. The water is clear, the sand is inviting, and the surrounding greenery makes it feel peaceful. It’s a place where multiple generations can relax together without needing constant entertainment.
Shelly Bay Beach: Calm Waters and Built-In Family Fun
Another beach that’s firmly part of our family rhythm is Shelly Bay Beach, located on Bermuda’s North Shore. When I think of a beach that’s especially suited for young children and easy-going family days, Shelly Bay always comes to mind.
The water here is typically calmer than the South Shore, which makes it feel comfortable and predictable for families with little ones. It’s one of those beaches where parents can exhale a bit, knowing conditions are usually gentle.
Our Shelly Bay days often start with food. We usually grab a pizza from Pizza House and bring it along for lunch, though there’s also a restaurant right at Shelly Bay if you want something even easier. After eating, we almost always head straight to the playground.
That playground is a huge part of what makes Shelly Bay so family-friendly. It gives kids a place to burn off energy while you wait before swimming, because of course, you don’t go swimming right after eating. It’s saved many afternoons for us and gives kids something fun to do even if they’re not ready to get in the water yet.
Once enough time has passed, we’re back in the water. My family is always up for a swim, and Shelly Bay’s calm conditions make it easy for kids to ease in and enjoy themselves without rushing.
A Stop at Horseshoe Bay: Familiar and Iconic

No family beach day in Bermuda feels complete without at least stopping at Horseshoe Bay Beach. Even when I don’t have as much personal footage from the main beach itself, it’s still deeply familiar to me as a Bermudian.
Horseshoe Bay is long and wide, which makes it ideal for families who want space. You can set up away from the shoreline, spread out, and let kids move freely without feeling crowded. There’s always a sense of activity here, even in the off-season, which can feel reassuring when you’re traveling with children.
Port Royal Cove (Baby Beach): Waves, Wonder, and Easy Fun
One of the most family-friendly parts of Horseshoe Bay is Port Royal Cove, often called Baby Beach. This sheltered cove feels like a protected pocket of the ocean, and it’s where Horseshoe Bay really shines for families with kids.
The surrounding rock formations block strong waves, creating calm, shallow water that’s ideal for young swimmers. Kids can splash, float, and explore without parents feeling constantly on edge. It’s also a wonderful place for gentle snorkeling. Even close to shore, you might spot parrotfish, small fish, and sea plants, all moving quietly through clear water.
The rocks around the cove add a sense of adventure without danger. Kids love watching the water move around them, and parents appreciate how contained and safe the area feels.
Shelly Bay vs Horseshoe Bay: Which Should Families Choose?

Both beaches are excellent for families, but they serve different needs, and knowing when to choose each one makes all the difference.
Choose Shelly Bay Beach if:
- You have younger children or toddlers
- You want consistently calm water
- You value having a playground right next to the beach
- You’re planning a relaxed day with built-in breaks
Choose Horseshoe Bay and Port Royal Cove if:
- Your kids enjoy exploring and light adventure
- You want a mix of iconic scenery and safe swimming
- You’re comfortable navigating a slightly busier beach
- You want access to amenities, food, and variety
Many families, including mine, enjoy doing both in one trip, depending on energy levels and the day’s rhythm.
Why These Beach Days Stay With You
What makes days like these memorable isn’t just the scenery. It’s the way Bermuda’s beaches support connection across generations. From a quiet girls’ day at John Smith’s Bay, to playground time and pizza at Shelly Bay, to splashing in the waves at Port Royal Cove, each stop offers something different without feeling disconnected.
As a Bermudian and a parent, these are the beaches I trust. They’re familiar, adaptable, and welcoming to families at every stage. You don’t need elaborate plans or packed itineraries. You just need time, fresh air, and a willingness to let the day unfold.
That’s what makes family beach days in Bermuda so special. They don’t just give you memories. They give you moments you’ll want to return to again and again.
