Factors to Consider for the Best Family Beach

Choosing the right beach can make or break your family outing. Some beaches cater specifically to families, offering features and amenities that help create a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

As a parent who has traveled to many beaches with babies and children, here are some key factors that I recommend you should consider when selecting a family beach:

  1. Safety: This should be your top priority. Look for beaches with lifeguards on duty, shallow waters, and a safe environment for kids to play in. Many family-friendly beaches also have designated swimming areas, which can help keep everyone safe.

This was definitely a plus when we visited Wrightsville Beach. I liked that there were lifeguard stations along the beach. The section of the north end where we stayed even had a small natural pool that was on the beach but still protected from the surf and waves that could get pretty intense at times.
  2. Amenities: Clean restrooms, picnic areas, and food vendors can make a huge difference when spending a whole day at the beach. You’ll also want to check if the beach has shaded areas, parking, and easy access to nearby attractions.

Trust me, even if you bring your own snacks they can sometimes spoil in the heat and salty mist. Knowing that there is somewhere close by to grab a quick snack provides real peace of mind. Hungry bellies do not make happy people, babies, children, and adults alike.

Even though the restaurant at the Johnny Mercer Pier in Wrightsville was small, it was nice to grab a quick snack for the entire family.
  3. Family-Friendly Activities: Some beaches have playgrounds, shallow wading pools, or nature trails nearby, which can keep kids entertained. Attractions like amusement parks, aquariums, and educational centers are always a bonus.
  4. Accessibility & Parking: Easy access to the beach and ample parking spots make for a smooth and enjoyable experience, especially when you’re traveling with kids and all their gear.

Considering these factors will help ensure that your day at the beach is as fun and relaxing as possible.

  1. Pack the Essentials: Don’t forget sunscreen, hats, towels, and plenty of water to keep everyone hydrated. Beach toys like frisbees and buckets are great for kids to stay entertained.
  2. Shade Is Key: If you have young children, consider bringing an umbrella or small beach tent for some shade. This will help keep everyone cool and comfortable throughout the day.
  3. Check the Weather: Be sure to check the weather forecast ahead of time to avoid any surprises. Some beaches may get crowded during peak hours, so arriving early will help you secure a good spot.
  4. Snacks and Drinks: Bring a cooler with snacks and drinks to keep everyone fueled throughout the day. Having some light, portable snacks can save you from the long lines at food stands.
